Reflections on Conversations with Daddy Late in Life

Written July 5, 2005 (the last year of my father's life)

Reflecting back upon my father and his life I wonder how I could go for so many years and not know how much poetry my father could quote. That he could remember his friends' names from childhood, even their addresses; could talk animatedly, as if it were just yesterday, of walking to the little corner grocer for a Moon Pie and an RC Cola; of throwing his paper route before school on his bicycle and going up and down every street in Leaksville so many times that he could make those trips in his memory simply by closing his eyes, and did so often, including during his service in the Marines. He told me on several occasions of lying awake during the night, unable to sleep, and walking the streets of his beloved hometown in his memory. Going into the homes of friends and family and remembering specifics. He would say, "It's been said you can't go home again, but I do it all the time. My memories take me home."

My daddy's heart home for the last 53+ years has been with our mother, the love of his life. I don't think in my entire life I've heard my parents quarrel. They just always deferred to each other, thinking nothing important enough to fuel a rift or sustain an argument. Their love produced five children, 14 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren (at this writing there are 8 great-grandchildren). Dad is very sentimental and has kept many of the notes and cards we, as young children, gave him over the years.

I've spent all week just sitting, literally and figuratively, at my father's feet listening. He seems to have so much to say and I have a need to hear it. A need to hear the voice of this man I have heard for 51 years and can't imagine not hearing. It's as if I can't listen fast enough. Time is moving too quickly and there is so much to say. I have to leave soon. I hate that I live 7 hours away. Weeks between trips are going to seem like an eternity when there used to be times, half a year or more, between visits. Time is running out. I wish I could have all those past years back. I wish I had understood then how precious those days and hours with my father were going to become.

I massage daddy's diabetic feet, an act of love, something simple to do. Yet the act becomes more somehow. It becomes a way of connecting to him and of honoring him. It feels like an live electric current between my hands and his warm skin covering his thin bony feet. His feet are so slender - I never realized that before, and soft because he never walked barefooted. There is a slight pigeon-toeing when he walks. I've never seen him cross his legs like many men do with his foot resting on the opposite knee. He always crosses his legs daintily, more like a woman, with his long slender foot toed in. Come to think of it I've never seen daddy sit in that familiar, confident, open-legged posture, typical of men. I pause as I hold his soft foot and we hold a gaze into each other's eyes, not speaking, but speaking volumes. Two sets of brown eyes glistened with tears that don't quite escape their boundaries.

"These feet have taken me a long way." Daddy starts talking again, "all over the streets of Leaksville growing up. Okinawa, Pearl Harbor, Siam, Philippines, Guadalcanal. He said he thanked Adolf Hitler. Strange thing to say I thought, but he went on to explain how if one thing was changed in your history how everything else changes. Thus the ironical gratitude for the war coming along and giving him the opportunity to escape the mill town he loved but didn't want to spend his entire life in, knowing he'd end up like his father working in the mill, drinking, never experiencing anything else. He would have never met mom, the love of his life, and of course would have none of his children or grandchildren. And that's how it was that at the tender age of 17 my dad enlisted in the Marines, after being turned down by the Army because he wore glasses. He had driven to Portsmouth, VA with one of his friends to enlist. When the Army turned him down, someone told him to go to the Marine recruiter, "...because the Marines take anybody!" During boot training it was discovered what a sharp-shooter he was, so for a time he was kept at the base doing rifle-training with other green recruits. Eventually he would leave for the South Pacific theater with a large Browning Machine Gun that weighed about 16 lbs. Dad isn't a big guy, and back then he was 18 years old. The gun was too much for him to haul around on long foot patrols so a nice guy in his platoon voluntarily carried it for him.

My dad is an intellect - unapologetically. His richest most robust world is between his ears. You'd never find him covered with grease in the garage tearing down an engine. It doesn't seem like men today read that much but there actually couldn't be a manlier hobby. Teddy Roosevelt was a voracious reader and so were most of the greatest men in history. Reading allows you to connect with the great thinkers and writers of history and expose you to new ideas. It makes you "go deep" and become more well-rounded, able to talk on a level that the majority of people seem to be too distracted to participate in. Maybe they just have nothing to say - because they don't read enough. I see dad pondering something deeply after reading, and then he begins to extrovert his thoughts over something he read, looking for an exchange of ideas, a meaningful discussion. How I wish I was that kind of person but my thoughts must be shorter,  in staccato time and all over the place. It must be lonely for him not feeling he has anyone to talk to on his intellectual level.

Well, daddy just shifted from one subject to another one. I wish I had more days just to sit at his feet and listen. Now, at the end of his days on earth, we are finally saying all the things we feel and want to say and maybe never did. Why does it take pending death to incite us to cherish the precious gift of each day with those we love? It's all over too quickly. Life is a mere breath. I see that now. But then again, there is eternity - time that never ends. Days and days of days and days. I'm so thankful there is a heaven and I'm glad of the assurance that my precious father is going there and that I will once again sit at his feet and listen.

When I'm ready tol eave to drive back to Virginia I go to his bedside to say goodbye,  knowing it will probably be the last time.  It's hard to let go of his hand.  My kiss to his cheek lingers and our tears merge.  He whispers,  "I love you a bushel and a peck," and I reply,  "...and a hug around the neck. " I cross the room slowly and look back.  He smiles and whispers,  "Drive safe. " Yes,  Daddy,  I will.  You have a nice trip to; I'll see you soon."  His eyes are drawn back up to the top right corner of the room, as if he sees something there that he can't take his eyes off of. He's been staring there for days, a half smile teases the corners of his lips up slightly as if he'd seen something nice or perhaps heard something pleasant; it must have been heaven's door opening.

GOD WILL BRING JUSTICE

We all go through situations that are unfair; life has thrown you a curve, it’s not what you had planned.  Even though life is not always fair, God IS FAIR, and if you will keep his your trust in Him, and not get bitter, but just keep moving forward, God has promised He will pay you back for every unfair thing that’s happened.  Don’t let one bad break ruin the rest of your life, keep you from the amazing future God has in store. What happened may have been wrong, what they did may have put you at a disadvantage, that was unfair, but what they did cannot stop your destiny, they don’t have the final say, God has the final say. God said “I will restore the years that were stolen, give you beauty for those ashes, weeping may endure for a night, but joy is coming in the morning.”  Nothing that’s happened to you is a surprise to God, God already has the restoration, vindication, new beginning; that setback was simply a setup for God to take you to a higher level.  You’ve got to shake off the self-pity, the defeat, and get ready for God to do something new. He’s going to pay you back for every injustice.

Exodus 3:7
Then the LORD said, “I have surely seen the affliction of my people who are in Egypt and have heard their cry because of their taskmasters. I know their sufferings
God has seen every wrong that’s been done to you, every person that hurt you, every tear you shed, every injustice; God went on to say:

Exodus 3:8
And I have come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians and to bring them up out of that land to a good and broad land, a land flowing with milk and honey.

There comes a point where God says “enough is enough; I’ve seen it, now I’m going to do something about it.  I’m not going to just give you what you deserve, but I’m going to make the enemy pay and bring you out better than you were before.”  God is a God of justice; He always makes the enemy pay for bringing the trouble into your life.  It may not happen overnight, God is keeping the records, and He knows exactly what you’re owed.

God sees every time you do the right thing but the wrong thing happens, take the high road and forgive, you let it go, work hard but you didn’t get the credit, God is closely watching, you have an account with Him, He’ll make sure you not only get what you deserve, but His justice is to pay you back with more.  Some of you have been in an unfair situation and it’s gone on a long time. You’ve lost your passion, your fire, thinking that’s the way it’s always going to be.  God is saying to you, “I have come down to do something about it”; you need to get ready, it’s payback time, everything the enemy has stolen, God is going to restore - the joy, peace, health, dreams - God is going to pay you back for the childhood you didn’t have, for that person that falsely accused you, for the years you lost in an abusive relationship. He has seen everything you’ve been through.
Don’t go around with a defeated mentality, that’s going to stop God from working; you may have had more than your share of bad breaks and could very easily get discouraged and settle where you are.  Resist that because your attitude should be, “I’m not staying here, I know it's payback time, restoration time, vindication time, favor time”; Almighty God has come down on your behalf.

Psalm 27:10 (AMP)
Although my father and my mother have forsaken me, yet the Lord will take me up [adopt me as His child].

If you’ll just keep moving forward, being the best that you can be, God will take what’s meant for your harm and He will use it to your advantage.  God will open doors that no man can shut;  God will give you favor and cause people to want to be good to you.  You may be in a situation where because of the poor choices of others it seems like you’re stuck, you’ll never get out of that rut, accomplish your dreams; God knows how to get you to where you’re supposed to be.  All through the day, in your mind, in your thoughts, you should be saying “Father, I want to thank you that vengeance is yours and not mine. I know you’re a God of justice and that you’re restoring the years, and the dreams, and no person’s going to keep me from my destiny. I will become everything you created me to be.” Have that attitude of faith.  Shake off the negative comments, what people say about you doesn’t determine who you are. Shake off the disrespect, keep your head held high, and God will promote you in spite of what they said.  One way God pays you back is to prepare a table before you in the presence of your enemies; that means God will promote you in front of the people that were trying to hold you down; He’ll show you favor and honor in front of those that said you’re not good enough.

Hebrews 10:30
God is just a God and He will repay the exact compensation owed you. He will settle and solve the cases of His people.

Some of you have cases that need to be settled, people have tried to push you down, make you feel inferior; you worked hard pursuing your dream, but the bottom fell out;  now you’re starting over. You could easily have a chip on your shoulder;  you’ve got to know God has promised to settle your case, but you got to get in agreement with God and start expecting his holy payback time.; If you want to see God pay you back, make your wrongs right, then when things come against you, you’ll feel like being bitter, complaining;  dig your heels in, and say “I know my redeemer lives, God’s going to turn this around, no weapon formed against me is going to prosper, my best days are still out in my future”;  you gotta have this attitude of faith, knowing that God is a God of justice and He will settle your case. God is for you, not against you.

God has seen what you’ve been through, every tear you’ve shed. He knows the disappointment, the heartache you feel, and this is not the end. It’s a new beginning. You’re not going to just come out of this barely surviving. God’s going to make the enemy pay and bring you out better off than you were before. God is still on the throne - He’s in complete control.  Stay in agreement with God. We all have unfair things that come against us, we all go through bad breaks, but you have to remember God not only sees it, but He’s promised if you’ll just keep moving forward, if you won’t get bitter, He will settle your case. The way God settles the case is not just to turn it around, not to just make it right, God will bring you out better off than you were before.

Isaiah 61:7
Because you got a double dose of trouble and more than your share of contempt, Your inheritance in the land will be doubled and your joy go on forever.

You may feel like you got a double dose of trouble, you worked hard, but the bottom fell out, don’t get stuck there thinking that that’s your lot in life, that you got shortchanged, that you’ll always have a disadvantage. The truth is, that unfair situation has qualified you for double.  It doesn’t have to stop you.  If you’ll have the right attitude, God will use it to thrust you forward.  You may have had a bad break, but just don’t sit around with a chip on your shoulder. every unfair thing that has happened has qualified you for double because God is a God of justice. He wants to pay you back, but you’ve got to do your part; shake off the self-pity, what they said about you, what didn’t work out, the way you were raised, and get ready for a double dose of God’s favor, blessing, health, peace, creativity, get ready for God to do exceeding abundantly above and beyond.  When you go through unfair situations, it’s never easy, we never like it, but keep it in the right perspective. That person that’s talking about you, trying to make you look bad, in a sense they did you a favor, they just qualified you for double. That person that walked out on you, left you when you needed them the most, don’t sit around thinking that there’s something wrong with you, you’re inadequate, less than, blow them a kiss goodbye and get ready for double. It’s payback time;  God wants to do something new in your life.

When you let God settle your case, it will be better than you could have ever done it yourself;  don’t be sour because of something that you lost, or something that was taken from you, instead of being bitter and trying to get even, stay on the high road. God sees the injustice, He knows what they took, and if you’ll let God settle your case, He’ll not only give you what you deserve, but God will pay you back with even more. God has the final say. God knows how to pay you back. He’s not limited by the laws of nature, or by what people say. When you go to work each week, remember, you’re not working unto people, you’re working unto God.  If somebody is being dishonest or playing political games, don’t get upset, don’t try to pay them back. God is keeping the records. He will make sure you not only get what you deserve, God will pay you back with even more.

This is a new day, it is payback time, get ready for a double dose of God’s goodness and favor. God is going to make the enemy pay for bringing the trouble into your life. Instead of complaining about it, get up in the morning and say “I know my redeemer lives!”  Remember, every difficulty, every unfair situation - that has qualified you for double. Some of you even this week are going to see cases settled, restoration, vindication, promotion, breakthroughs, a promise coming to pass;  the God of justice is going to show Himself strong in your life;  you’re not going to just come out, you’re going to come out better off than you were before.

God Brings Good out of Bad: The Stoning of Stephen

I found a cd recording of my daddy preaching this sermon at Goshen Baptist Church near Wilmington, NC where he lived. I wish I had a recording of all his sermons. What a gift that would be! He could have no idea then how very much this sermon means to me right now. How much it means to all of us in the family as we wait for God to bring something good out of something awful that is happening to his first grandson, a young Christian man, baptized by his grandfather, who loves his God with all his heart but nevertheless is suffering persecution and lies that would be too much to bear were it not for his faith in God. Now, in September, 2025, two weeks out from the assassination of Charlie Kirk, it is again so relevant. "What was intended for evil, God intends for good, and the saving of many lives."

Sermon:
"I want to talk to you about a man named Stephen. To be influential for Christ is not without cost. It costs ambition. It might cost your life. The Bible says to gain life you have to lose life. Eternal life is gained when earthly life is put in proper order. The cause of Christ has to be first in your life. Stephen suffered death because of his conviction and loyalty to God. To have escaped death would not have been the victory for Stephen. God offers him a Christian reward and heaven has been prepared for the faithful. The way you meet trials and temptations will influence other people. Your greatest accomplishment might come through the lives of others. Stephen greatest contribution might have been the example of his life as he died before Saul of Tarsus. Stephen didn't know as he was being stoned to death that his death was giving birth to one of the greatest missionaries the world has ever know - the Apostle Paul. If there had been no Stephen it is very likely there would have been no Paul.

Walls

The body turned away - - "One feels alone."
The rejecting look on the face -- "One feels judged."
The unwillingness to hear what one says -- "One feels misunderstood."
The multitude of nonverbal ways in which we speak -- "One feels abased."
The harsh advice given in the presence of hurt and pain -- "One feels as an object."

We all have this ability --
I on my side of the wall and you on yours.
We pick up the old stones with which the wall was built and we put them back in place.

Do we know what we are walling in and walling out?
Usually a lot of love; an opportunity to be human to another.
"He drew a circle that shut me out; Heretic! Rebel! A thing to flout.
But love and I had the wit to win.
We drew a circle that took him in."
(From the poem " Outwitted”   ― Edwin Markham)

I want to tell you something!
If you fail to get to know me then you have missed a nice person!
I'm not bragging, but telling you that there is something and someone worth knowing in me.
Now I'll say the same for each of you!
Within each of y ou there is a great man, woman or child.
I am diminished by not getting to know you.

Why do we allow walls to divide us?

Robert Frost said, "Something there is that doesn't love a wall, that wants it down!"
I say that SOMEONE doesn't love a wall---that is God!

[Weymouth Translation]
But now in Christ Jesus you who once were so far away have been brought near through the blood of Christ.  For He is our peace...and in His own human nature has broken down the hostile dividing wall...
[Conybeare]...the wall which parted us.
[Williams]...the wall which kept us apart.

The Cross
The Blood of Jesus Christ
God's gift of the Holy Spirit.
All these affirm God's attitude toward our walls of division.

Every time we lay stone upon stone, God is busy destroying the wall.
